AIRTEL TANZANIA AND NEMC LEAD CLEAN-UP EXERCISE AT MBEZI BEACH KIDIMBWI TO COMBAT PLASTIC WASTE
Dar es Salaam, June 2025.
Telecommunications company Airtel Tanzania, in collaboration with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), conducted a beach clean-up exercise at Mbezi Beach Kidimbwi and donated cleaning equipment to the Mbezi Beach B local government as part of their campaign titled “Together Let’s Eliminate Plastic Waste.”
Speaking during the exercise, Airtel's Director of Communication and Regulatory Affairs, Ms. Beatrice Singano, emphasized Airtel’s commitment to making the campaign sustainable as part of supporting the National Agenda and the efforts of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, in protecting and conserving the environment.
“In areas with large gatherings of people, we often find a lot of waste, especially non-biodegradable materials like plastics and bottles. During this clean-up, we witnessed a significant amount of such waste. I urge the community to take care of the environment by sorting and disposing of waste in proper places for recycling,” Ms. Singano stated.
Alongside the clean-up, Airtel handed over cleaning tools to the Chairperson of the Mbezi Beach B local government, which will support continued environmental upkeep in the area.
On his part, NEMC’s Acting Eastern Zone Manager, Mr. Jeremia Nyakwaka, said a thorough clean-up was conducted, and a large amount of plastic and bottle waste was found—mostly due to careless disposal that eventually ends up in the ocean and rivers.
“I call on citizens and stakeholders to protect the environment by refraining from littering, especially plastics and bottles, which pose risks to both human health and aquatic ecosystems,” emphasized Mr. Nyakwaka.
He also expressed appreciation to Airtel Tanzania and all the community members who participated in the exercise, adding that NEMC is open to partnering with all stakeholders committed to environmental conservation.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Mbezi Beach B local government, Ms. Asha Vionatis, said environmental conservation remains their top priority and that such collaborations greatly support their ongoing efforts at the community level.
“We have established tree nurseries for reforestation efforts in our areas, along with offering environmental education in schools and within the community. We thank NEMC and Airtel for partnering with us, and we encourage more of such initiatives,” said Ms. Vionatis.
The Together Let’s Eliminate Plastic Waste campaign aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and foster collective participation in creating clean, safe, and sustainable environments for future generations.
