15 African Countries Meet in Dar es Salaam to Strengthen Nuclear Energy Framework.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – June 22, 2025

Fifteen African countries have gathered in Dar es Salaam for a significant meeting aimed at improving nuclear energy frameworks and facilitating the implementation of nuclear projects in their respective nations.

The meeting, hosted by the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), brought together representatives from across the continent to discuss nuclear safety, the importance of protecting nuclear sources, and collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Daniel Mushi, emphasized the purpose of the gathering.

> “We are meeting today as 15 African countries to enhance our cooperation on nuclear energy. The Atomic Energy Agency has organized this meeting with the goal of protecting nuclear sources and supporting each country to implement its nuclear initiatives effectively,” said Professor Mushi.

He also stressed the importance of adhering to strict safety regulations to avoid harm to humans and the environment, while ensuring that countries benefit economically from nuclear programs.

The Director General of TAEC, Professor Najat Kassim Mohamed, noted that various stages in the development of nuclear energy infrastructure have been laid out globally, and the entire process may take between 7 to 10 years.

> “In Tanzania, we have several nuclear sources. Our economy is growing, and the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission is gaining greater authority to manage nuclear activities,” she said.

She added that the meeting is also intended to promote the signing of nuclear-related agreements among the participating countries and to recognize Tanzania’s strategic role, especially for landlocked countries that rely on Tanzania’s ports.

The Chairman of the TAEC Board, Mr. John Simba Chaka, highlighted that one of the meeting’s goals is to share experiences on nuclear regulations, especially on how to handle and transport nuclear minerals, which are used in various sectors.
