GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES TWO EDUCATION PATHWAYS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, has announced that the government has introduced a dual-pathway system in secondary education to give students options that align with their abilities and future aspirations.

Speaking to journalists today, December 10, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Prof. Mkenda said students will choose their preferred pathway after completing primary school, with guidance from parents and teachers.

He explained that the pathways include a general education pathway, which focuses on theoretical and academic subjects, and a vocational education pathway, which emphasizes practical skills, hands-on training, and career preparation.

The government has also established a flexible system that allows students to switch pathways. For example, a student who completes Form Four under the vocational pathway may proceed to Forms Five and Six under the general education pathway if they wish.

Graduates of the vocational pathway will receive nationally recognized certificates issued by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET) and the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA). These certificates will enable them to seek employment, start their own businesses, or pursue further training.

Prof. Mkenda emphasized that the goal is to ensure no student loses opportunities by choosing the vocational pathway, as both pathways are equally valued in building the nation’s human capital.
